A Studio Space For Artists
Eddie Kennedy was born in Thurles, County Tipperary, in 1960 and
graduated from Limerick School of Art and Design in 1983. Awarded a
Masters in Fine Art at the University of Cincinnati in 1989, he moved
to New York to paint in, what was at the time, the centre of the
contemporary art world. Since those early heady days, Kennedy has
maintained a significant relationship with the United States where he
exhibits regularly with John Cacciola, his New York Chelsea gallery
and at art fairs in Los Angeles, Miami, etc. He also has had a number
of highly successful exhibitions in Cork, Belfast and London but it is
of course at Dublin's Hillsboro Fine Art where his work is most
regularly on view. His painting has been the subject of many positive
accolades, seen as an innovative explorer in the world of landscape.
However, for the artist the landscape is simply "a hanger for the
paint - a point of departure, a sounding board for finding the voice
within". For fellow Irish painter Donald Teskey, Kennedy's paintings
are "optimistic, full of light, inviting and also daring" seeing them
as "portraits of light and space, like windows into Eddie's world".
Irish Times art critic, Aidan Dunne, too applauds Kennedy's unique
exploration of surface, texture, space and light, commenting "these
are paintings made for us to inhabit". In a recent interview, Kennedy
remembering his college days in Limerick recalled the atmosphere of
the time as "full of expectation and seriousness", a description
appropriate too perhaps for these special artworks.
